As the new Manufacturing Manager/Director Designate at HepcoMotion, Barry Engstrom's role will be to build on the company's manufacturing strengths that enable it to provide a comprehensive linear motion services to industry.
Implementing world-class manufacturing techniques is a skill in which Barry Engstrom has a tremendous track record. During his time with Philips DAP in Hastings and Nortel Networks in Devon he headed teams whose lean manufacturing programme saw product quality and output grow substantially while achieving corresponding production savings.
Engstrom comments: "I have first-hand experience of mass production moving to low-cost labour countries in Europe, but the big penalty of that is lack of flexibility. One of the key strengths of HepcoMotion is its ability to provide exactly what the customer wants. So achieving maximum manufacturing efficiency is critical and that is an area in which I have a lot of experience."
Before entering management, Engstrom was a time-served engineer. Having completed his toolmaking apprenticeship at Ford Motor Company he joined Philips DAP in 1990, eventually becoming a Production Manager. He took a similar role at Nortel Networks in 1998, rising to become Manufacturing Manager, accountable for its $100m business and responsible for 2500 employees.
Engstrom joins HepcoMotion from Bookham Technology Plc, where he held the post of Manufacturing Director since 2004. He concludes: "HepcoMotion is a strong company with great global potential. Its focus is on British manufacturing and that feels good. I am glad to be a part of it."
