SKF Director awarded Tribology Trust's Gold MedalProfessor Stathis Ioannides, SKF Group Director for Product Engineering, has been awarded the Tribology Trust's Gold Medal. This prestigious award, administered by the United Kingdom Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), is internationally recognised as the highest honour in tribology research and application, reflecting SKF's position as a leader in knowledge engineering.

Professor Ioannides is a globally acknowledged expert in tribology and was the main developer of the ISO standard for calculations of bearing life that is used today by bearing companies across the world. The ISO standard, based on the SKF Life Theory that Ioannides worked on from 1985, was formally issued in 2006.

Tom Johnstone, President and CEO of the SKF Group, commentes: "Excellence in tribology is a fundamental cornerstone to excellence in the design, development and application of bearing-related products and solutions for many industries. With this award, Stathis is continuing the great tradition of knowledge experts that has made SKF the company it is today. We are immensely pleased that he has been recognised in this way, and extremely proud to have him as part of our product development team these last 15 years."

As well as leading Product Engineering for the SKF Group, Professor Ioannides is a Visiting Professor at Imperial College London, one of the most prominent and renowned universities in the world for tribology studies.

The Gold Medal will be presented to Professor Ioannides early in 2009 at a prestigious award ceremony in London.
