Safety Evaluation Tool for EN ISO 13849-1 and EN 62061Siemens is launching a free online Safety Evaluation Tool that enables machine builders to perform the calculations necessary when designing machinery in accordance with EN 62061 and EN ISO 13849-1. Furthermore, the software generates reports that can be used as evidence of compliance with the essential health and safety requirements of the new Machine Directive 2006/42/EC.

The Safety Evaluation Tool automatically calculates the quality of safety functions in accordance with EN 62061 (Safety of machinery – Functional safety of electrical, electronic and programmable electronic control systems) and EN ISO 13849-1 (Safety of machinery – Safety-related parts of control systems). Users simply have to specify the desired safety function, for example monitoring of a protective door, then use the examples provided or specify particular functions. After this, users enter the safety components required for the machine, namely sensors, evaluation unit and actuators. These can be selected from a database of Siemens products that have already been certified according to the relevant safety standards. Alternatively, products from other manufacturers can be entered manually. Finally, the tool calculates the Safety Integrity Level (SIL) or the Performance Level (PL). The result is a report that enables compliance with the standards to be demonstrated.

In addition to the tool, Siemens has created an online forum with tips and support from the SET team and other users.
