December’s CBI Industrial Trends Survey found UK manufacturers' order books and output were at an 18-year high for the second consecutive month. Furthermore, firms expect output growth to continue over the coming three months, albeit at a somewhat slower pace.

This survey follows the publication of statistics in the autumn by the Manufacturing Technologies Association (MTA) that showed confidence in the sector is at a two-year high, with a large majority of companies predicting improvements in their businesses over the next twelve months.

Let us hope that 2014 does turn out to be a good year for machine builders and system integrators, as well as manufacturers wanting to upgrade existing machinery and factory automation.
