This month I want to highlight two excellent technical articles. The first of these, from Sick, explains the revisions to IEC 61496-1 (EN 61496-1), the standard for electro-sensitive protective equipment such as light curtains and laser area scanners. This article is highly recommended if you use this type of safety device on your machines.

Second, we have an article from Pilz about EN ISO 14119:2013, the new standard for guard interlocking devices. Pilz had previously written about the anticipated standard but has now amended the article following publication of the standard and its harmonisation to the Machinery Directive. If your machines have guard interlocks, I suggest you read this article.
