For those of you who have been looking forward to the merger of ISO 13849 and IEC 62061 into a single machine functional safety standard IEC/ISO 17305, I am afraid you are going to be disappointed. ISO has ceased its involvement in the project, so there will be no merger.

Still on the subject of functional safety standards, a second amendment to EN 62061 (IEC 62061) was published in October, containing minor amendments and updates to normative references. However, Stewart Robinson of TUV SUD Product Service has told me that IEC may produce a new edition of this standard to incorporate some of the changes that were being considered for IEC/ISO 17305.

In November's newsletter it was suggested that the publication of machine guarding standard ISO 14120 (replacing EN 953) was imminent and, indeed, it has now been published. A new subclause in ISO 14120 relates to 'Guards with electrically conductive parts' and this month we have a technical article explaining the requirements and their relationship to those found in the electrical safety standard EN 60204-1.

Finally, if you are a marketing manager or consultant/agent, please have a look at our media guide to learn more about promotional opportunities with our newsletter and website, and how they can support your 2016 campaigns.
