5th April 2017

Last year the International Organization for Standardization published ISO/TS 15066:2016 'Robots and robotic devices - Collaborative robots' (and BSI published the UK equivalent, PD ISO/TS 15066:2016). Having had a chance to review this technical specification, which does not have the same status as a standard, I would be interested to hear what other people think of it. Suppliers of collaborative robots (cobots) often emphasise that the inherent low forces and speeds mean cobots are easy to implement without the need for additional safeguards, but ISO/TS 15066 presents some complex guidance and it would take time and effort to undertake a risk assessment and demonstrate compliance with the requirements.

If you are a supplier or end user who has implemented a cobot in accordance with ISO/TS 15066, what did you think of it? Please email me at editor@machinebuilding.net.
