New RFE1600 series 1.6kW 1U front-end power suppliesTDK Corporation is introducing the TDK-Lambda RFE1600 series of front-end power supplies; these extremely compact, 1U-high, 1.6kW supplies are suitable for standalone and distributed power architecture (DPA) applications requiring reliable 12V, 24V, 32V and 48V bulk power in the industrial, automation, test and communications markets. Up to 20 per cent output voltage adjustment is possible, enabling the RFE1600 supplies to be used in a variety of customer-specific applications including battery charging.

Operating from a universal input of 85-265V AC, the RFE1600 supplies are designed to meet the '80 Plus' standard and are up to 92 per cent efficient, which minimises heat dissipation. The RFE1600-12, -24, -32 and -48 models can be used individually, or up to 10 can be connected in parallel to form an N+1 redundant power system with internal ORing Mosfets and single-wire current share.

Each power supply has two temperature-controlled internal cooling fans for longer life, and they can operate in temperatures ranging from -10 to +70degC. With overall dimensions of 85x41x320mm (3.35x1.61x12.6in) the TDK-Lambda RFE1600 power supply achieves a power density of 24W/in3; according to the company, this is 21 per cent better than the nearest competitor.

Overvoltage, overcurrent and overtemperature protection are standard features and, for system monitoring, there are opto-isolated signals for DC Good, AC Fail and overtemperature warning, with a rear panel LED indicator for AC OK (green) and DC OK/Fail (green/red). Remote on/off control is also standard, as is remote sense and an auxiliary 12V 0.5A output. An I2C PMBus-compatible interface is available as an option for all models.

As well as being EN 55022 and FCC compliant (achieving class B conducted and class A radiated emissions), the RFE1600 series supplies meet UL/EN 60950-1 safety approvals and are CE marked. Harmonic correction meets the EN 61000-3-2 standard and immunity meets the IEC 61000-4-2, -3, -4, -5, -6, -8 and -11 standard. The TDK-Lambda RFE1600 power supplies are available for delivery from stock and are backed by a three-year warranty.
