Leuze's new RSL 400 safety laser scanners are now available, having been announced earlier this year. The full series comprises 16 model variants with a scanning angle of 270 degrees and up to 8.25m operating range over the full 270 degrees. The safety laser scanners can be configured easily via Bluetooth (10m range) and Ethernet TCP/IP. Thanks to the extended functionality of the high-specification RSL 400 scanners, in some cases one device can perform the functions that would normally require two, thereby offering machine builders and system integrators a considerable saving.
Even with the large number of possible field pairs (100), the creation of independent configurations with application-oriented one-step configuration is said to be simpler than ever. The devices' large scanning angle of 270 degrees is particularly advantageous, for example, in the case of mounting on corners or edges for front and side guarding, and can, depending on the application, replace a second laser scanner. On AGVs, two scanners can be mounted on opposite corners to provide protection along all four sides of the vehicle.
With two completely autonomous protective functions, two pairs of safety switching outputs and nine other configurable switching outputs, the RSL 430 and RSL 440 variants perform two protection tasks simultaneously - such as safeguarding two sides of a machine where one might be safe to access while the other is not, and vice versa. RSL 400 laser area scanners are suitable for both static and mobile machinery; they are EN 61496 (IEC 61496) Type 3 devices and are appropriate for applications requiring SIL 2 (IEC 62061) or PL d (EN ISO 13849-1).
Easy to use, high availability
Leuze's RSL 400 series incorporates decades of experience, resulting in excellent performance and usability that is claimed to be unsurpassed – the company says that the application of such multi-talented sensor technology has never been easier. All devices demonstrate a high level of availability on account of the high resolution (rod test) and an insensitivity to dust thanks to the high scanning rate that enables 0.1degree angular resolution to be achieved while maintaining the same 0.8ms response time as Leuze's previous laser area scanners. A large plain-text display with integrated electronic spirit level ensures simple alignment when mounting the connector unit, particularly when using the optional mounting bracket that is equipped with a pair of levelling screws. The connector unit also contains the cable management and is the mechanical and electrical basis of the devices. If the floor-mounted bracket is specified, this positions the scanner at the industry-standard height of 150mm above floor level.
The scanner itself can be removed at any time using standard tools and fitted with other RSL 400 devices without the need for realignment, readjustment or lengthy configuration – which is an important advantage for maintenance and repair. Thanks to the Ethernet interface, the devices have full network connectivity. When connected via Bluetooth, the scanner can be configured without any need for the engineer to enter the safeguarded area.
