Innovative new incremental encoders from ifm electronic are not only programmable, they also have switched outputs for a pre-set count or speed, and the major innovation is the built-in two-colour display to indicate, for example, count or speed.
Setting the resolution and other parameters is simply achieved using the intuitive pushbuttons on the encoder. Remote setting is also possible, and for this ifm electronic chose the IO-Link open standard, so users are not tied to proprietary software but can instead use standard PLCs or HMIs connected via the popular IO-Link protocol that is supported by major manufacturers. Being connected via IO-Link, the encoders are ready for Industry 4.0 and IoT (Internet of Things) implementations.
Easy to specify, easy to use
Machine builders and other uses of incremental encoder can simply select the housing they require, choosing 6mm or 10mm diameter solid shafts, or a 12mm semi-hollow shaft. Having reduced their stockholding requirement, users can simply programme the smart encoders with the required resolution (up to 10,000 pulses/revolution) and select from 5V or 24V for the outputs.
Connection is simple, too, as ifm has responded to customer feedback about the inconvenience of M23 connectors, so the programmable incremental encoders are equipped with the more compact M12 connectors. Furthermore, the connection exits the encoder housing via a rotating joint, so users can have the cable running axially or radially, depending on the space available on the machine. To ensure the encoders are protected for use in industrial environments they are sealed to IP65 or IP67; in addition, magnetic sensing is used for robustness, reliability and accuracy, and the housing diameter is just 58mm for installation where space is restricted.
Complementing the new encoders, ifm also offers a range of accessories including flexible shaft couplings, measuring wheels, mounting brackets, cables and a memory plug for the IO-Link sensor parameters.
According to ifm, not only is the programmable incremental encoder technology ground-breaking, but so is the pricing!
