2008 has proved to be a record year for machine builder and laser marking specialist ES Technology Limited, despite the undoubtedly difficult last 12 months for many UK companies.

ES Technology Ltd was founded in 1987 and has since built an enviable reputation, primarily as a manufacturer of special purpose industrial laser marking systems. The company is also a laser marking sub-contractor and a distributor of laser systems and optical components. This comprehensive range of products and services has proven to be a key factor in the ongoing growth and development of ES Technology, with the company now actively involved in many different industries, such as motorsport, automotive, aerospace, medical, telecommunications and defence. This diversity has not only enabled ES to handle fluctuations in particular market segments, but to achieve an overall growth in turnover of 25 per cent in 2008.

Laser Marking Systems Point the Way for 2009

As one of the UK's leading laser system integrators, ES Technology has over the years acquired a combination of laser expertise and automation design skills, enabling the company to provide complete turnkey systems for a broad range of part-handling and marking applications. The reputation for quality and performance of ES manufactured systems has been recognised by UK customers for many years. In the course of 2008, ES Technology used this solid reputation as a launch pad to extend their area of activity into mainland Europe. With bespoke laser marking systems already delivered to Poland and the Czech Republic, and other active projects in France and Denmark, ES has now established a firm foothold for further sales of bespoke laser marking systems within Europe in 2009.

For companies who cannot justify the purchase of their own bespoke laser marking system ES Technology offer an efficient sub-contract laser marking service. Last year also saw ES increase their sub-contract marking capacity with the addition of yet another laser. With a combination of seven different YAG and CO2 lasers operating full time, ES Technology has grown to become a leading sub-contract laser marking job-shop. The company also secured major contracts for this business segment from the medical and motorsport sectors, leading to a further increase in staff in this area and maintaining their high standards of short turnaround, which can be as little as 48 hours if required.

ES Technology is also the United Kingdom and Ireland distributor for Concept Laser GmbH and responsible for the sales, marketing, service & support of concept.

Laser's LaserCUSING Systems within these markets.

Another major achievement for ES in 2008 was the sale of the first M2 LaserCUSING System within the UK market to Airbus UK. The LaserCUSING process, although initially pioneered for building conformally cooled injection mould inserts for the mould tool manufacturing industry, is also suited to other market segments such as Formula 1, medical device, aerospace, automotive and academic institutions.

LaserCUSING can be used to make a wide range of parts including final production components in steel, titanium, aluminium or inconel, inserts for injection moulding tools and inserts for pressure die casting.

The laser systems and optics business segments also performed well in 2008 with sales of ULS flat bed plotter-style laser systems and optical components exceeding the company's expectations.

ES Technology has also been appointed by DILAS as their distributor for semi-conductor laser components and modules within the United Kingdom and Ireland. This product range is a significant addition to the portfolio of optical components available from ES Technology. The diverse range of DILAS components and modules includes high-powered water-cooled diode laser arrays, fibre-coupled diode laser modules and conduction-cooled fibre-coupled diode laser modules.

A further and complementary addition in 2008 was the UNIVET range of laser safety eyewear and glass panels, now distributed by ES Technology in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The laser application knowledge and experience within the company enables ES Technology to offer sound advice and recommendations on the most appropriate laser safety specifications and equipment required for a particular application. The UNIVET range covers both Laser and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) applications. Having consolidated not only their product offering but their activities in new industries and markets throughout 2008, ES Technology Limited is now looking forward with confidence to the challenging year ahead.
