Transdev has installed six fully automated storage and retrieval systems to streamline stock control and parts handling for an ever-increasing product line that now includes geared motors and gearboxes in addition to belting, chain and engineering plastics. Over 28,000 stock lines are now available from the UK-based manufacturing and distribution centre, and Transdev has filled its 45,000ft2 warehouse to the ceiling with traditional shelving and storage.
Controlled by inventory and space management software linked to Transdev's MRP system, each vertical carousel is densely packed with automated trays containing stock products. These impressive structures stand 7m high and save the equivalent of 80 per cent of the total space previously required. Supplied by Kardex, the new storage has enabled Transdev to optimise its warehousing in just a few weeks. The space-saving storage has significantly reduced picking times, increased inventory accuracy and made manual handling more comfortable for warehouse staff.
The space gained has also enabled the company to reorganise its manufacturing and administration areas to even higher levels of efficiency.
Ian Osborne, Transdev's chairman, comments: "Our new high-density storage and retrieval systems have reduced our warehousing real estate by a phenomenal amount, made stock retrieval much easier and vastly increased our stock visibility - and the new working environment has been well received by our staff. There is no doubt that our customers will benefit with improved deliveries and a higher level of customer service throughout the product range."
