PMA is launching the KS108 Easy programmable automation controller (PAC) that combines the ability to provide complete process control with an innovative, easy-to-use interface. The device has been designed to offer an effective alternative to PLCs that is simpler and faster to implement, and is suitable for controlling a wide range of equipment using elements of multi-loop process, automation and data logging.
In particular, PMA has found that for many customers the cost of using PLCs imposes a high overhead, with the process of changing program and HMI screens being particularly time-consuming and complex. The KS108 Easy has therefore been introduced for companies that want a system that is simple to implement at a competitive cost, with the additional benefit of technical support when needed.
The KS108 Easy features a 145 x 265mm display, which is able to present data as text, bar or trend, in addition to presenting alarms and event reminders. Standard screens are created as a project is developed, with customisation being possible using an HMI editor - such as the creation of additional data fields, splash pages for company logos and navigation links.
Units offer advanced process control with powerful logic capabilities that allow them to meet the needs of demanding applications, while also minimising the time required for programming. Standard process function blocks provide a straightforward method of implementing advanced process and temperature control strategies, as each block contains all the parameters and display layout for that function, which simplifies the configuration process.
Integration of the KS108 Easy is claimed to be simple, with its networking capabilities enabling it to communicate with other field devices using Ethernet, CANopen or RS232/485, or to be integrated within a larger systems infrastructure. The I/O for the device is also accessed using either Ethernet or CANopen using one of two PMA systems: Vario I/O or RL400.
The KS108 Easy can log process and statistical data to create historic system reports, which can be critical to optimise the efficiency of processes and minimise operating costs. The information can be viewed locally or, alternatively, exported via a USB port in the front fascia or transferred via the KS108's communications ports. Alarms and events with a real time stamp can also be exported.
In support of the hardware is the specially developed Blue Design software suite, which includes programming, parameter settings, PID tuning, simulation and monitoring tools for simple set-up and design flexibility. The software features a library of process function blocks, enabling advanced functionality to be created while minimising programming time. An offline simulation feature enables problems to be identified quickly with no risk to live processes, once again saving both time and money.
PMA is part of the Danaher Sensors and Controls Group, which also includes CAL Controls, and the PMA KS108 Easy is available in the UK from West Instruments, a division of the Danaher Industrial Controls Group.
