B10d lifetimes for INTORQ spring-applied electromagnetic brakes

Spring-applied electromagnetic brakes are often used in safety-critical applications. As part of a safety-related control system, they need to be evaluated in accordance with the new legislation EN ISO 13849-1. Specialist brake manufacturer INTORQ has now released data giving the B10d lifetimes for its full range of electromagnetic brakes, thereby enabling machine designers to comply with the new legislation. The lifetime data is available on the Techdrives website, which also carries full product information.

An essential piece of data for calculating the Performance Level (PL) of a safety-related system is the B10d value of the system components, representing the number of cycles at which 10 per cent of random tested samples fail in a way that is classified as dangerous. From this value a Mean Time To dangerous Failure (MTTFd) can be calculated, based on the operating time and cycling frequency.

INTORQ spring-applied brakes are designed for static and dynamic operation, both cycling and infrequent operation. The most common model of brake is the BFK458, which has rated torques in a range from 2-600Nm. Here the B10d value is typically 6million operations but, for safety-sensitive applications, a long-life version of the brake is available with a B10d value of up to 90million operations. In many cases this can help in achieving the highest safety Performance Level PLe.
