Ball screw jacks are key to radio telescope dish accuracy

Power jacks supplied ten 50kN metric ball screw jacks in a translating screw configuration to the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, to drive the elevation on twin-array radio telescope antenna dishes and achieve the required pointing accuracy of better than half a minute of arc.

The jacks are mounted on a special trunnion base and the ball screw - which has a stroke of 1050mm - is protected from the elements by a bellows boot. A safety stop nut protects the screw jack from accidental overtravel.
