BSi updates guide to technical product specifications

PP 8888-2:2007 'Engineering drawing practice: a guide for further and higher education to BS 8888:2006, Technical Product Specification (TPS)' has just been revised.

BSi updates guide to technical product specifications

Aimed primarily at engineering students, but also useful for inexperienced engineers and technicians, the guide provides useful information relating to BS 8888. This standard enables product designers and manufacturers using British and international standards to have a common technical language. It gives specifiers and suppliers a precise means of describing technical products, which can avoid misunderstanding in the communication of manufacturing requirements.

Students need to be aware of the precision with which designers and engineers need to communicate their product specifications. This updated guide is suitable for certificate and diploma students, and undergraduates in further and higher education.

PP 8888-2:2007 provides:

  • Guidance to the application of BS 8888 within all elements of engineering design, manufacturing and verification
  • Cross-references to relevant standards (eg International Standards (ISO), European Standards (EN), British Standards (BS), and informative (optional) standards)
  • A list of symbols and abbreviations
  • Examples of the application of BS 8888 and referenced standards

Phil Childs, commenting on behalf of the technical committee responsible for Technical Product Specification, says: "With the ever increasing trend of separating the place of manufacture from the place of design, it is critical that the designer's intent is communicated in a clear and unambiguous manner. It is for this reason that Technical Product Specification (TPS) has been developed by BSI and ISO to provide common definitions for design, manufacturing and verification. This education guide provides practical examples to show students how designers apply the many TPS standards to ensure understanding of their intent, irrespective of language or discipline".

PP 8888-2:2007 'Engineering drawing practice: a guide for further and higher education to BS 8888:2006, Technical Product Specification (TPS)' (ISBN 978 0 580 50111 1) is priced at £30 each or £100 for a pack of five (plus postage and packaging).
