Renishaw metal additive manufacturing optimises engine design

Renishaw worked with engine manufacturing company Cobra Aero, based in Michigan, USA, to optimise its design processes for aircraft and motorcycle engines. After working with Renishaw to develop new manufacturing processes, Cobra Aero invested in the AM 400 system to increase its additive manufacturing (AM) capabilities.

Renishaw produces race car manifold using additive manufacturing

Renishaw supported the Brunel University London race team in its 20th year participating in the Formula Student (FS) competition. Renishaw contributed its metal additive manufacturing (AM) expertise to help Brunel Racing create a manifold part for the team's BR-XX car, which was used to compete at FS-UK in Silverstone and FS-ATA in Italy in July.

Renold Gears has recently worked closely with a major manufacturer of mining equipment to design heavy-duty custom gear units that will provide longer service life for its customers and significantly reduce the cost of ownership by cutting downtime and maintenance. The manufacturer contacted Renold Gears because of its proven track record with designing custom gears for the mining industry, and particularly log washer drives.

Thermal imaging camera pays for itself many times over

During a routine inspection at a substation, a Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) electrician felt heat blast his face as he passed within a couple of metres of an energised transformer bank. Some heat is expected, of course, but the intensity of it alarmed him. He immediately grabbed a handheld thermal imaging camera from his van and within seconds verified that there was a major issue and the system was shut down for investigation.

The curfboard is a new type of sports equipment that combines surfing and skateboarding. The demands placed on its moving components, in particular the bearings in the front truck, are particularly high. These must be wear-resistant, robust, maintenance-free and reliable even under the toughest "˜curf' conditions. For this reason, the developers at curfboard GmbH (www.curfboard.com) have selected wear-resistant plain bearings made of iglidur Z and iglidur J350 high-performance polymers from igus.
