Low-maintenance bearings for rail vehicle door systems

In rail passenger vehicles and freight cars, door systems are complex sub-systems that are subject to high loads and stresses. Door components such as bearings therefore need to be reliable to ensure long maintenance intervals. Schaeffler offers a wide range of rotary and linear bearings for door systems that meet all of these high requirements.

Integrated water quality monitoring for water treatment service

Providing high-quality water supplies is an essential service delivered by municipal authorities and utility companies around the world. Maintaining water quality requires constant monitoring and testing to ensure accurate measurements are being taken. Traditionally this has involved time-consuming calibration and maintenance. A shire council in New South Wales, Australia, however, has decided to do things differently and turned to Bürkert Fluid Control Systems for an automated precision monitoring system that saves them time and money.

Ball screws for servo-electric actuators in powder presses

S-HTF series ball screws from NSK are for the first time enabling powder-press manufacturer Osterwalder AG to employ servo-electric drives on its larger machines, rather than conventional hydraulic drives. As a result, new systems such as the Osterwalder OPP 2000 multi-level machine with 2000kN press force, use around 80 per cent less energy than hydraulic counterparts of equivalent power output. In addition, pressed parts are produced with significantly higher dimensional accuracy, which reduces the amount of reworking and substantially lowers process and material costs.

How to manage power and control cables reliably on cranes

Container handling is a vital element in global logistics, from European ports along the North Sea to the ports on the east coast of China. Here automatic stacking cranes work 24/7 to arrange containers in columns, side by side and stacks. They can travel distances of up to 800m and speeds of 600m/min, which can be a challenge to reliably manage power and control cables.

Tri-axis inertial measurement units for subterranean curvature

Combining its gyro-equipped inertial measurement units (IMUs) and including a high-definition camera and additional sensors, Tamagawa Seiki's TUG-NAVI "˜Under Ground Navigator' enables highly precise curvature and inner diameter measurement plus visual inspection for subterranean ducts and boreholes. The sensor and motion control component designer and manufacturer, represented in the UK by Mclennan, developed the novel instrument in collaboration a Korean utilities infrastructure company to reduce time and costs for replacing and maintaining old and dimensionally unpredictable buried cable networks.

Malting company boosts productivity by upgrading control system

Process control represents the central nervous system of a manufacturing line and so has a large impact on efficiency and product quality. When the UK's leading independent malting company decided it was being held back by a legacy control system, it turned to Mitsubishi Electric for a solution. The upgrade, implemented in only four days, slashed downtime and empowered operators at Crisp to fully govern its manufacturing processes, leading to improved product quality and consistency.
