Control cabinet free automation takes centre stage

Beckhoff UK will exhibit at MACH 2026 at the NEC, Birmingham from April 20-24, 2026, demonstrating its MX-System alongside XTS and a two-tile XPlanar system.

At Stand 18-540, the automation control specialist will show how cabinet-free control and advanced transport technologies can help machine tool builders reduce complexity and improve performance.

A key focus for 2026 is the MX-System, Beckhoff's modular, pluggable automation platform that replaces the traditional control cabinet. Integrating IPC, I/O, drive technology and system components into a robust baseplate, the MX-System mounts directly onto the machine frame. For machine builders, this reduces panel build time, simplifies installation and supports modular machine concepts.

Alongside the MX-System, visitors will see the XTS linear transport system, which enables highly flexible product handling with individually controlled movers. This can support auxiliary processes in machining environments, including assembly, inspection and part transfer. Beckhoff will also demonstrate a two-tile XPlanar system, illustrating contactless planar transport with precise positioning and six degrees of freedom.

Together, these technologies demonstrate how PC-based control, EtherCAT communication and integrated motion can be combined within a single, scalable architecture. By consolidating PLC, motion, robotics and safety into one platform, machine builders can streamline development and enable straightforward expansion or reconfiguration.

"2026 will be the year of the MX-System, as more machine builders look to move beyond traditional cabinet-based automation," said Neil March, product specialist for the MX-System at Beckhoff UK. "By mounting control hardware directly onto the machine, manufacturers can reduce footprint, cut wiring and create cleaner, more modular designs.

"At MACH 2026, we'll be showing how the MX-System works seamlessly with technologies like XTS and XPlanar to deliver a fully integrated solution, from transport and handling through to high-performance machine control."

Beckhoff's technical team will be available throughout the exhibition to discuss new machine designs and retrofit projects. Visitors wishing to arrange a meeting in advance of MACH 2026 can contact Beckhoff UK directly.
