DavyMarkham wins two business awards
DavyMarkham has won two major categories in the 2008 Sheffield Business Awards, organised by Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and jointly sponsored by the Environment Agency and BiG: Make It Your Business. Before a capacity audience at Ponds Forge, the awards celebrated the city's business achievements, with DavyMarkham securing the Halliwells Excellence in International Trade Award, recognising successful development in international markets, and the Wake Smith Manufacturing Award for demonstrating significant improvements in productivity. The evening was compered by comedian Jon Culshaw, who treated the audience to a selection of his entertaining political impressions.
DavyMarkham's Managing Director Kevin Parkin, who accepted the awards on behalf of the company, says: "We are delighted to have achieved this double success, particularly as Sheffield is regarded as the centre of the heavy engineering and steel industries, in which we compete. We owe this achievement to the skills and experience of our staff, whether they are deployed overseas on customer sites, marketing our services, designing complex structures or machining and fabricating projects on the shop floor. As an enterprise, we have turned around our fortunes over the past couple of years, thanks to the enthusiastic collaboration of management, unions and staff. These awards are a credit to them all."
In its submission for the international trade award, DavyMarkham cited the inroads it has made into the North American deep mine hoisting market, thanks to the design and engineering of advanced equipment that meets exacting customer specifications and complies with the latest safety standards. In its manufacturing award entry, the company made particular reference to collaborative ventures with local universities in Sheffield, Huddersfield and Leeds, all with the goal of improving best practice in manufacturing technique.
In a record year for entries, the judges considered that DavyMarkham's success in both directions provided another indication that Sheffield still has a strong manufacturing base, which is recognised around the world.
