ESAB ShipWeld winners at BAE Systems - Submarine Solutions
An internal welding Qualifying heat of ESAB's annual ShipWeld competition took place recently at BAE Systems - Submarine Solutions, Barrow-in-Furness.
The 2nd year apprentices had seven hours to complete the three test pieces that are being used for the ShipWeld grand final later in the year. This involved both MIG and MMA welding techniques incorporating X-ray and Visual inspection methods to determine the overall winner.
Micha Knight was the winner, and runner-up was Lyndon Scott. Micha now goes down in history as the first female to reach the ShipWeld final. Both Micha and Lyndon are 18 years old. Prizes were presented by Derek Harvey, ESAB Sales and Marketing Manager - Standard Equipment & Automation, and Cheron Robinson, ESAB Publicity Manager. Micha was presented with the latest in ESAB welding helmets, a yellow AristoTech welding screen, and Lyndon Scott was presented with an OrigoTech yellow welding screen.
Dave Keenan from the Adult Apprentice Training Department opened the awards ceremony and thanked everyone for their efforts and involvement with the competition, and gave special thanks to event organisers Instructor Malcolm McCann and Welding Assessor Mike Willetts.
In addition to the prizes awarded by ESAB, Allan Dunn - Operations Director of BAE Barrow - awarded the winner and runner-up with trophies for their achievements and praised the high entry level of the Barrow competitors.
