Fast PID controller reacts to rapid temperature changes

For some applications proprietary PID controllers cannot react fast enough to changes in the process temperatures, making control of the heating cycles very difficult. For example, the induction heating of small wire components is so fast that the heating cycle would be completed before the controller had fully reacted, resulting in overheating and a rejected component. To meet this requirement, IMPAC is introducing the PI 6000 Fast PID Controller.

Fast PID controller reacts to rapid temperature changes

The PI 6000 is a very fast programmable PID-controller, designed for use with the IMPAC digital pyrometers (Series 5, 12, 50, 140, 510 and 520). It features an extremely short controller cycle time of only 250us and can execute a maximum of nine programs (ramps) with up to 20 temperature steps. Each program can be selected, started, stopped or paused via the instrument, so target temperatures can be preset and sequentially triggered via time and temperature regulation. Manual control is also possible.

Programming is carried out using a PC and InfraWin software. However, a PC is not required for the actual operation, since the PI 6000 can be controlled via the integral keys.

In addition to the measuring pyrometer, a second pyrometer, which monitors the measured object, can be attached to the PI 6000. An 'emergency shut-off' is activated if the selected maximum temperature is exceeded. Any pyrometer with analogue output 0/4-20mA can be used as an alarm pyrometer', provided that it is also appropriate for the individual application.

The PI 6000's display shows the selected program, the current measured temperature, as well as the activity of the controller-output. Additional LEDs above the instruments buttons also indicate if the programme was stopped (by the 'alarm pyrometer') or if the laser targeting light is switched on (if applicable).

IMPAC says the PI 6000 enables full control of processes to be implemented in applications that previously relied on time/power algorithms, thereby eliminating problems due to power fluctuations and other process variables.
