Exico has added two new calculation tools to its website that enable users to work out the relationship between torque, power and speed in electric motor applications. By entering the three main parameters of motor power, speed and derating percentage, users can plot the torque/speed model of either force ventilated or self-ventilated, squirrel cage induction motors controlled with a frequency inverter.
The graph is fully interactive and shows the entire speed range of the motor, providing a useful tool to assist engineers in calculations. A feature of the tool is the display of 70 per cent of breakdown torque in Newton-metres (Nm), which again can be determined by applying the three main parameters. The 70 per cent of breakdown torque means that there is a 30 per cent reserve for acceleration torque during the VSD control.
This calculation tool complements Exico's other free-to-use tools which include power reduction due to ambient temperature, calculation of short or intermittent duty cycles, calculation of energy saving potential and plotting of IE3 and IE4 induction motor efficiency against percentage load.
To make the tool even more accessible and easy to use, there are no login requirements and the web page does not ask for any user details. Users can go straight to the calculation tools drop-down menu on the Exico website at www.exico.co.uk and begin using it straight away.
