Phoenix Contact is offering a free functional safety app, which the company claims is the first of its kind. This app has been designed to be a helpful tool for machine builders complying with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and designing safety-related control systems to EN ISO 13849-1.

A checklist-based query enables users to see if the Essential Health and Safety Requirements of the Machinery Directive have been met. For each question, there is an additional page of information with detailed explanations. For example, the required Performance Level is determined from the risk graphs for safety functions according to EN ISO 13849-1. Furthermore, the MTTFd value - the mean time until the dangerous failure of a controller's safety-related elements - is determined in accordance with EN ISO 13849-1.
