Gambica has published a useful Guide to selection of efficient motors and controls, which is available as a free PDF download (260kB). This guide is published jointly with REMA (Rotating Electrical Machines Association).
The four-page illustrated booklet addresses the differences in BS EN 60034-30 (IEC 60034-30) motor efficiency ratings, the different control methods and their benefits, and the issues that affect the decision-making process for fixed or variable-speed controls. Readers are not directed to install variable-speed drives on every application, but are instead encouraged to consider what might be the best option for a given application - and that could mean using a soft starter and/or sensors and controls to enable the motor to be switched off when it is not required.
Depending on the application, energy costs can represent over 95 per cent of the total cost of ownership of an electric motor, hence purchasing a more efficient motor or installing a variable-speed drive (VSD) can make a substantial difference to a company's operating costs. Other factors that can influence the overall system efficiency are also mentioned.
