Kontron VPX computing node based on Intel Xeon-D Processor

Kontron is announcing the successful design and test of the 3U VPX board, and the start of evaluation unit deliveries to its key customers. Based on the advanced 8-core version of the Intel Xeon-D processor architecture (Broadwell DE), the highly integrated Kontron VX3058 brings server-class computing capabilities to the battlefield with its Dual 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE), high bandwidth PCI Express (PCIe) 3.0, and high speed DDR4 memory.

Ruggedised for harsh environments and size, weight, power and cost (SWaP-C) optimised, the VX3058 provides breakthrough digital signal processing (DSP) performance. These benefits make it suitable for demanding military server and other high-performance embedded computing (HPEC) applications, especially for virtual machine architectures that can take advantage of the extensive capital and operational efficiencies provided by isolated workloads configured to dynamically share common resources. Kontron will demonstrate the advanced capabilities of its VX3058 at DSEI 2015, September 15-18, at the ExCeL London conference centre, Kontron booth # S3-285.

Vincent Chuffart, Product Portfolio Manager for Kontron, says: "Kontron's successful integration of this type of server-class CPU in a power envelope compatible with harsh environmental conditions signals the advent of a new era of powerful rugged parallel servers. Now system designers can solve with a single architecture a very diverse set of computing problems such as sensor processing in radar and sonar applications, massive parallel computing for cyber security and data analytics and IT server consolidation through virtualisation. This marks truly disruptive technology that helps define systems of systems in the defence domain aligning with requests of many of our strategic customers. The VX3058 innovatively enables developers to offer versatile solutions based on a limited set of computer building blocks, thereby reducing costs while accelerating time to deployment."

The Kontron VX3058 in detail

The Kontron VX3058 provides two 10 GBASE-KR ports and 8 lanes Gen3 PCI Express to the backplane. Providing more capabilities in a 3U footprint, the VX3058 also offers versatile mezzanine options for XMC, storage, graphics, M.2, and I/O. The M.2 interface can be used for storage or for integration of customised personality modules. Front I/O module options are selectable for DVI/HDMI, Ethernet or other interfaces. The Kontron VxFabricTM provides an API that extends the TCP/IP protocol over the PCI Express infrastructure that when combined with Kontron's advanced switch technologies, enables significantly higher I/O bandwidth.

Kontron's VX3058 is pin compatible with the company's popular and previous generation VX3044 3U VPX board, which already deploys 10 gigabit (G) Ethernet and PCIe gen3 on the OpenVPX backplane. Options include a shelf manager for centralised health management, sequenced system power-up and Temperature/Power/Performance management as well as Power-On Built-in Test (PBIT) that give designers a comprehensive package for board and system diagnosis.

Early field test (EFT) boards are available now. To request an evaluation unit, please go to VX3058 eval request. Follow the link for more information on the Kontron VX3058#U VPX board.
