MEMS-based air and gas flow sensors cost less

Omron is adding a more compact and lower cost model to its range of air and gas flow sensors, designed to detect clogged air intake filters and air velocity flows in applications such as office automation equipment, domestic air purifiers and coolers, and HVAC installations. The new sensors are said to cost less than similar alternatives based on Pitot tube technology.

The new Omron D6F-V is less than half the size of the existing D6F-W, and is also available at typically half the cost. D6F-V has dimensions of 24 x 14 x 8mm and monitors air velocities from 0 to 3m/s. Omron will continue to offer the D6F-W, however, which is available in versions designed for 0–1m/s and 0–4m/s, and also features a temperature compensation circuit to improve performance over a wide range of ambient temperatures. The D6F-W measures 39 x 20 x 9mm and has an accuracy of +/-5 per cent full-scale deflection.

Omron's D6F-W and D6F-V MEMS-based sensors both incorporate a patent-pending dust segregation system (DSS) that separates up to 99.5 per cent (simulation test result) of dry airborne particulates normally encountered in both domestic and commercial environments to ensure an extremely stable measurement characteristic over the product life time. They are an excellent alternative to single-point Pitot tubes and thermal dispersion sensors in heating ducts and building/environmental management systems.

To ensure the sensors are easy and quick to install, they are optimally adjusted at the factory as standard.
