MICA mini industrial computer demonstrated with RFID application

Harting will be showing the new MICA ruggedised computer ruggedised computer at the Drives and Controls show (NEC, Birmingham, 12-14 April 2016). This is the first time the MICA (Modular Industry Computing Architecture) mini industrial computer will be seen in the UK.

Gavin Stoppel, Product and Applications Manager at Harting UK, says: "Companies deploying large-scale automation solutions using industrial Internet of Things (IoT) platforms and distributed control systems will need this type of device. We believe that ruggedised computers are a key element in delivery of Industry 4.0 and we expect to see considerable interest in MICA."

Being very compact (182x86x35mm) and sealed to IP67, MICA devices can be installed almost anywhere, and Harting says they have been designed to provide a long and reliable operating life in industrial environments at temperatures from -25 to +55degC. Physical protection comes from housings made of powder-coated aluminium.

Inside, the MICA benefits from a 1GHz ARM processor with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of eMMC memory; up to 32GB more Flash memory can be added by means of a Micro SD Card. Two models of MICA are being introduced, namely the HAIIC MICA Base and the HAIIC MICA USB.

At the Drives and Controls show, Harting will be demonstrating how the MICA can be used as a very simple way to add read/write RFID tagging to existing or new machines, processes and factories. Thanks to the MICA's pure Linux core, Harting says that using the MICA is a far easier way to interface with RFID devices than using industrial computers running Windows. Nevertheless, RFID is only one potential application for the MICA mini computer, as machine builders and system integrators will no doubt find many innovative ways to utilise the processing power on space-restricted equipment or where distributed intelligence is advantageous.

Harting expects MICA ruggedised mini industrial computers to be ready for delivery to customers this summer. Follow the link for more information about the MICA ruggedised computer.
