Modular connectors for frequent usage with high reliability

ODU-UK is promoting its ODU-MAC modular connectors for industrial automation applications. These products are characterised by a robust construction that is rated for up to 100,000 mate/unmate cycles, so are suitable for applications where frequent usage is required - such as automation with interchangeable tooling, or test equipment. Where there is a risk that the connectors could be damaged, and downtime must be minimised, the connectors can have sacrificial heads installed without any need to use larger housings. In the event of the connector becoming damaged, the sacrificial head can be replaced very quickly without any need to disturb the wiring.

Modular connectors for frequent usage with high reliability

According to ODU-UK, its ODU-MAC connectors are considerably more robust than similar products from other suppliers, yet the price premium is small. The connectors' ability to handle up to 100,000 mating cycles (and some customers have reported in excess of one million cycles without any sign of malfunction) is predominantly due to the ODU Springtac contact principle, which also guarantees low contact resistance, an extremely secure connection, high current capacity, and excellent vibration tolerance.

The aluminium housings can be fitted with modules for conveying power, analogue signals, digital data and media including hydraulic fluids and compressed air for pneumatic systems, and there are also modules for fibre optics. Sacrificial heads can be installed from the outset, or can be retrofitted if a particular connector proves to be more vulnerable than anticipated. Although the sacrificial head adds to the connector's cost, it is likely to pay for itself the first time it avoids the need to strip a cable and replace a damaged connector.

High contact densities minimise the space required for each connector, and there are versions with DIN housings for harsh environments or manual docking, and further versions with aluminium housings for automated docking. Standard housings can be specified with a choice of a longitudinal locking lever or a spindle lock that is particularly useful where space is at a premium.
