Multi-axis controller incorporates multicore PC

B&R says its ACOPOSmulti product offers a high degree of efficiency for multi-axis machines implemented in a wide range of industries such as the plastics, packaging, print and textile industries. Machine manufacturers use ACOPOSmulti units to achieve excellent performance in a small space, which, in turn, means a decisive cost advantage. The APC820 integrates a high level of PC performance into the ACOPOSmulti platform. This enables users to save even more space in an electrical cabinet by freeing up space intended for the PC.

In the APC820, high-performance Core2 Duo processors ensure that the even demanding automation and visualisation systems run optimally. With the Core2 Duo, a high level of performance and a low level of power loss are achieved because Windows XP and the real-time operating system run in parallel on separate processor cores. It is up to the user to reserve a processor core exclusively for real-time or to release it for Windows. The available computing power from both cores is optimally used. Projects are easily developed in B&R Automation Studio. Completely new options and complex automation tasks that were previously distributed over a number of system platforms (for example controller, Windows computer, etc) are now brought together in a single device. With the integrated Smart Display Link in APC820, a maximum of four automation panels can be connected over a distance of up to 160m. Complex processes on physically separated machines can easily be controlled on site - which is a distinct advantage for commissioning, operation and service.

Simple integration

A wide range of onboard interfaces enables the APC820 to be optimally integrated in an automation system. Real-time communication between APC820, I/Os and drives occurs on an Ethernet Powerlink interface, which also comes as standard. This helps achieve cycle times down to 200us and ultra-precise timing of

The APC820 was designed for use in harsh environments. Not a single internal cable connection is used during construction, which makes it possible to achieve excellent vibration resistance and operational reliability. CompactFlash cards are used as the storage medium and are also optimal for use in Windows XP Professional and Windows XP embedded.
