New Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC - an expanded guide

A sixth edition of the Guide was published on 12 November 2011 - see Guide to the New Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, 6th edition.

Second edition

MachineBuilding.net is publishing a second edition of its popular free Guide to the New Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. This edition highlights more of the changes in the Directive and includes helpful comments from industry experts. In addition, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) was consulted, enabling input from this authority to be incorporated as well.

When the new Directive comes into force on 29 December 2009 there will be no transition period, so it is essential that companies building machines or partly-completed machines, as well as those performing final assembly or importing machinery for use in the European Economic Area, start preparing for the changes now. There will also be an impact on manufacturers and users of safety components, as these products will have to be CE marked under the new regime.

The latest amendment to the Machinery Directive is intended to simplify and clarify matters, but there are also other significant changes. These relate mainly to the Directive's scope, partly-completed machinery, fixings for fixed guards, conformity assessment and safety components. There are also new measures relating to 'market surveillance' (ie enforcement) and certification; EC type-examination certificates issued under the existing Directive will not be valid after 29 December 2009.

Running to 30 A4 pages, the guide includes an introduction, the background to the new Directive, timescales, a general overview and detailed analysis. Industry experts have contributed comments on issues such as fixings for fixed guards, CE marking of safety components and Authorised Representatives. There is also a section devoted to sources of further information - such as a link to the text for the new Directive.
