Pancake motor is a realistic alternative to conventional motors

A new GSR pancake motor series from Printed Motor Works (formerly PML) is described as 'the most radical redevelopment of the pancake motor in 40 years.' The range is now said to represent a realistic alternative to conventional DC and universal electric motors. For a long time engineers have admired the features and compact size of printed armature motors, also known as pancake or servodisc DC motors, but have not been able to justify the comparatively high price for general industrial applications. However, the lower-priced GSR motor range could make pancake motors commonplace in a host of new applications. Moreover, modern manufacturing techniques and intelligent design have made the GSR motors slimmer, down to just 19mm deep for a 70W motor and 41mm for a 1.6kW motor.

Printed Motor Work's development schedule has been driven by customer requests to make this niche product more mainstream, initially to compete with universal motors. An added benefit of this exercise has been that the product is now easier to install, quieter, more efficient and even flatter.

The GSR range still offers all of the features and benefits associated with pancake motors - such as rapid response, long brush life and low EMC emissions - and is still claimed to be the only motor in the world that has zero torque ripple.

Applications

Printed Motor Works anticipates the new motors being used for applications as varied as highly dynamic industrial robotics and medical equipment, through to basic pumps and fans.

The new pancake motors will be made in England at Printed Motor Works' Hampshire facility, thereby ensuring European quality standards but at a competitive price even compared with conventional DC and universal motors.

Samples for validating performance are available immediately; full production is planned to start in the second quarter of 2010.
