Pumping up the action

Gear pump propels VW from zero to 160 mph in 10 seconds'!

Pumping up the action

Here is one we felt we had to share with all our readers – an unlikely application of a Marzocchi gear pump supplied by jbj Techniques.

What makes it so special? Well, feeding kerosene into the afterburner of a jet-powered VW at 180 litres/min, 160 psi (11.03 bar) – and all delivered in 10-second bursts.

Kerosene and gear pumps usually do not mix. After discussing the application, the owner decided to mix in 2-stroke oil to provide some lubricity and prolong pump life.

To date, the pump has successfully delivered about 400 litres of fuel, providing the additional thrust required to propel this incredible machine from zero to 160 mph in 10 seconds!

“The level of detail in this build is astonishing and an object of beauty, as well as power,” states jbj Techniques. “Imagine the cleaning involved after the fun is finished.”
