The advantages of tilt sensors

The robust tilt sensors by elobau enable the precise and efficient monitoring of an object. Due to the functional principle based on MEMS technology, tilt sensors do not require any further mechanical connection and are therefore the simplest option for determining any position on one, two or three axes.

Where is a tilt sensor used?

Our tilt sensors are mainly used in off-highway vehicles. They are ideal for mobile machines in the fields of agriculture, forestry, construction, and material handling. The sensors continuously monitor the angle of inclination of an object in relation to gravity and thus provide reliable information for the safe control and movement of mobile machinery – from tractors and harvesters to excavators, wheel loaders, forklift trucks and telescopic handlers. In this way, the sensors enable important functions such as

  • Control of the cockpit level
  • Automatic compensation of slope inclinations
  • Position and tilt measurement of moving vehicle / machine parts, such as the boom of an excavator
  • Stabilization / tilt protection by monitoring the vehicle inclination

In this way, the tilt sensors prevent accidents when using mobile machinery and provide a timely warning if the tilt reaches a critical limit.

MEMS technology: robust and compact – for high precision

The N6 static and N7 dynamic use MEMS technology (microelectromechanical systems) – small elements that combine electrical and mechanical components on a single chip. Every movement or position deviation is reliably registered and leads to a change in the output signal, which precisely indicates the current tilt angle.

Sensor Fusion: clear signals even with strong shocks and vibrations

With particularly strong accelerations and jerky movements, purely gravity-based sensors reach their limits. This is why we have equipped the N7 dynamic with Sensor Fusion for such dynamic applications – an extremely responsive combination of accelerometer and gyroscope.

To calculate correct inclination information, the measurements from both components are combined, and any errors are corrected and filtered. The Kalman filter used for this is an algorithm that is based on relevant measurement and empirical values, compensates for inaccuracies and thus optimizes the stability of the measured values of the N7 dynamic.

Tilt sensors for greater safety, efficiency and productivity

Tilt sensors are the sensory organs of the technical world. Nowadays, they accompany every person in many actions and in all situations. When moving the smartphone and the associated automatic rotation of the screen or the self-stabilising intervention of the car when it starts to skid.

Based on non-contact MEMS technology, elobau’s tilt sensors are perfect for use in the off-highway sector (agricultural and forestry machinery, construction machinery and material handling machinery). There they are used for precise measurement of inclination angles and support manufacturers with constantly growing requirements: Our tilt sensors enable a higher degree of machine automation and the use of various assistance systems, helping to increase the efficiency and productivity of your mobile machinery.

In static machines such as lifting platforms or work platforms, for example, tilt sensors ensure that baskets remain in position and provide a safe standing position for workers.

Dynamic tilt sensors ensure safety when high dynamic influences such as accelerations, shocks and vibrations occur within the applications. In dumpers, for example, they ensure that the inclination of the vehicle is continuously monitored to prevent tipping. In forklifts and order pickers, they continuously measure the inclination of the forks and mast. In this way, they prevent accidents or provide a timely warning if the inclination is changed by the machine operator. Inclinometers are also installed in telehandlers to ensure precise and safe working when the telescopic arm is extended.
