Regenerative drives improve energy efficiency

Regenerative drives improve energy efficiency

Yaskawa has introduced a compact range of regenerative drives which it says are ideally suited to the ever-increasing demands to achieve ‘greener, energy efficient’ in manufacturing processes. The range includes the U1000 Low Harmonics Regenerative Matrix Converter, the D1000 Regenerative Converter Unit and the R1000 Regenerative Unit.

When the requirement is for improved energy efficiency on more physically demanding applications the U1000 drive is the ideal option. It is designed to exceed the performance of general purpose AC drives which not only helps to improve application performance but also exceeds the IEEE 519 harmonic guideline for power quality.

The U1000 drive represents a perfect match for single motor drive applications with requirements to power generation and low harmonics such as lifts, escalators, HVAC machinery, hoists, centrifuges and many others. It is also approved for global marine installations.

The ability to deliver a clean and reliable power supply for regenerative applications is increasingly a ‘must have’ for all control applications and the U1000 contributes to delivering the all-important power quality, energy savings, whilst maximising system efficiency.

The drive does not require any braking resistor which typically wastes any regenerative energy into heat. This means the regenerative energy can be utilised by other consumers in the same grid saving total energy cost and consumption, whilst also reducing the panel cooling system requirements.

The advanced technology of the Yaskawa matrix drive means there is no DC bus inside combining all the essential features in a single space-saving drive design reducing THDi to 5% without the need for external transformers, generators or cables.

Also, less parts means less maintenance. Other key features and benefits include; sinusoidal input current and power factor at 0.98, simple and compact installation 3-wire in, reduced life-cycle cost, reliable operation and up to 10 years of maintenance-free design.
