Robust planetary gearbox platform for harsh operating conditions

BURGER GROUP has expanded its portfolio with the new scalable PLG planetary gearbox platform for positioning and dosing applications in harsh operating conditions.

Robust planetary gearbox platform for harsh operating conditions

Drives based on the platform are designed for robustness and long service life, with IP6K9K protection as standard. The IP6K9K rating applies as standard to the scope of supply, so users do not need an additional enclosure to achieve this level of protection.

The platform is specifically designed for applications where dust, moisture and high-pressure cleaning place particular demands on the drive, such as agricultural machinery and production equipment. The resulting drives combine high power density with a compact design, making them well suited to applications requiring robustness and long service life. These include machinery and plant engineering, agricultural equipment, rail technology and building automation.

Reduced development effort

BURGER GROUP's PLG planetary gearbox platform provides a standardised component base for developing different drive variants. Unlike planetary gearboxes developed to customer specifications, it offers a standardised, modular building block system that enables tailored drive solutions to be implemented more quickly.

Four sizes share this common platform. Reusing standardised components allows new applications to be realised without developing an entirely new drive. This shortens development times, reduces the number of variants, standardises interfaces and reduces integration effort for users.

The four sizes, PLG 1 to PLG 4, range from 30 to 68 mm in outer diameter and deliver typical torques of 2 to 10 Nm. The platform is continuously being developed, with different ring gear diameters and numbers of gear stages enabling higher torques. In these non-self-locking gearboxes, load distribution across multiple planet gears ensures high torque density, high efficiency and low-noise operation. For an integrated drive solution, the gearboxes are combined within the platform with DC or BLDC motors for 12, 24 or 48 V, together with suitable electronics and software. CAN, LIN or Ethernet interfaces can enable integration into higher-level control systems.

Robust drives for demanding applications

The PLG platform is aimed at machine and equipment manufacturers and their system suppliers that need robust, durable drives while seeking to reduce the effort involved in selecting and matching motors, gearboxes, electronics and software for new drive variants.

Johannes Herdner, Head of the Drive Solutions Business Unit at BURGER GROUP, explains: "With the PLG platform, we specifically target applications where robustness and long service life are essential. We serve a niche in which these requirements are critical and our product offers significant added value.

"Whether dosing seeds, feeding material into a production line or adjusting a ventilation flap, our users should not have to develop a drive from scratch every time. Our PLG platform provides a reliable, easy-to-use foundation of proven components that can be combined to suit each application."
