The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) is organising a seminar on 17 September 2013, Intelligent automation systems: developing flexible industrial applications (reference S1776).
Intelligent automation addresses deficiencies of current automation technology including difficulty of use, servicing, reuse and disposal. It is needed if manufacturers are to achieve cost-effective flexible production of high-value products. Intelligent automation is particularly useful in situations where there are rapid changes in demand, and where stoppages for changeovers or maintenance are expensive and undesirable.
The seminar will present the state of the art in intelligent automation in a broad sense, with the main focus being on the components of intelligent automation systems (including robots, automated guided vehicles, sensors, vision systems, control systems and software). Intelligent algorithms for adaptation, optimisation and decision making (such as neural networks, fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms) will also be among the topics discussed, as will the integration of intelligent automation components into working systems. Actual and potential industrial applications of intelligent automation in high-value manufacturing will be covered.
This event is aimed at manufacturing and mechanical engineers with responsibility for designing, operating or maintaining industrial automation systems, as well as researchers in the general field of advanced manufacturing technology.
