Sensors by SICK and POWERLINK to speed up register control

Tremendously precise positioning requirements in the pre-press, press and post-press areas render fast, safe and economic production processes needed in printing and bookbinding applications. As a developer and manufacturer of intelligent sensor technology, SICK AG offers a wide variety of mature products for the optimisation of processes along the value chain in the printing industry.

Sensors by SICK and POWERLINK to speed up register control

The new RS25 register sensors by SICK can be used in various print mark processes for print control and monitoring applications. They fulfil ATEX standards for use in explosive environments. Linked with the processing unit via fibre-optic cable, its scanning unit uses RGB light to identify even critical marks.

These intelligent sensors are equipped with the real-time Ethernet POWERLINK as their communication platform. This allows for the fast data exchange a growing complexity, a rising number of axes and sustained trends toward higher speeds in print machines. A minimised jitter below 4 microseconds facilitates top repeatability, and implementation of the register control within the PLC software enables cost reduction and elevated ease of use in real time.

Stefan Schnegger, Managing Director of the Ethernet POWERLINK Standardization Group says: "With SICK, we welcome the leading supplier of sensor technology for the printing industry as a new member of the POWERLINK user group. The German manufacturer has recognised that POWERLINK with its capabilities for cross-communication and slave node multiplexing as well as its topology independence provides the bandwidth optimisation required in tomorrow's printing machines."
