Siemens UK & Ireland: preferred supplier for glass maunfacturer

Siemens UK & Ireland has strengthened its partnership with glass manufacturer NSG Group as it is announced as preferred supplier for electrical and control systems across the group's network of UK Architectural operations.

The announcement follows Siemens work with Pilkington UK Ltd - which forms part of the NSG Group - to deliver energy-saving technologies across its production sites to enhance overall energy performance, cut costs and drive a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future for the glass manufacturing giant.

As part of the existing partnership, the companies have developed a strategic approach to technical energy management systems through the creation of a tailored and innovative programme which utilises a financing package in the form of an energy performance contract that shares risk.

To date, activity has included the installation of new drive technologies and automation controls at one of Pilkington's Scottish production sites, as well as new pump system upgrades and a major programme to install an intelligent lighting system at one of the company's prime warehousing locations.

The recent announcement means Siemens technology could now be potentially used to standardise plants across Pilkington's, as well as the wider NSG Group's UK plants.

Gary Charlton, Pilkington's UK Operation Director, comments: "As a manufacturing company, energy consumption is a board level issue and through our work with Siemens, we've been able to develop an innovative energy management programme, providing us with greater control over our consumption and costs. We're delighted to be able to take the next step in this successful partnership through the announcement of Siemens as a preferred control technology supplier for all of our UK Architectural Operations, rather than working on a project-by-project basis."

As part of the existing Siemens/Pilkington partnership, significant energy reduction improvements have already been generated at some of Pilkington's UK sites. The holistic approach to energy management, covering a range of technology options, is on target to achieve total energy cost savings for the glass manufacturer in excess of 1 million over the next 3 years.

Nick Shore, Head of Engineering for NSG Group, adds: "Through its existing work with Pilkington, Siemens UK & Ireland has demonstrated not only the technical and commercial benefits offered through its solutions, but its commitment to effective energy management to deliver the best results for manufacturers. We look forward to driving further operational and energy efficiencies across our group operation in partnership with Siemens."

John Wilgar, Head of Indirect Procurement for NSG Group states: "Our Architectural Business in the UK has gained tremendous value from the relationship with Siemens in terms of energy management initiatives. We view Siemens as a visionary leader in this and other areas and we actively seek new ways to work together for mutual gain."

The announcement also signals a commitment to explore the use of Siemens technologies in NSG Group's global operations.

Steve Martin, at Siemens UK & Ireland, comments: "Working with a host of national and global manufacturers, Siemens UK & Ireland is well placed to stand back, take a holistic view at all requirements and help industrial enterprises maximise operating efficiencies. Our work with Pilkington enabled us to help the company tackle energy-related issues head-on through the adoption of the right technologies. We look forward to helping NSG Group achieve further savings across its wider operations."
