SKF is launching a new range of high-performance electric cylinders at this year's Drives and Controls exhibition. The CASM electric cylinders have been developed for use in a variety of technically and environmentally demanding applications, ranging from component handling, welding and clamping, to packaging and general automation. In each case, the new CASM electric cylinders are capable of providing up to 5400N of static force, at speeds of over 1m/sec, with stroke lengths of up to 800mm, and backlash of just +/-0.01mm.
The CASM electric cylinders have been introduced to meet the demand for energy efficient, reliable and high performance alternatives to traditional pneumatic or hydraulic devices. In some applications, the use of CASM technology can reduce energy consumption by up to 90 per cent, when compared with pneumatic systems, and can also minimise noise, contamination and overall maintenance. Additionally, each CASM electric cylinder incorporates advanced, long-life seals and wiper rings, to provide protection to IP54S, while the use of a sintered filter automatically compensates for pressure differences within the linear unit during movement.
There are three core versions of the CASM electric cylinders: CASM-32, CASM-40 and CASM-63, each with the option of a lead or ball screw, plus the ability to be paired with one of the many different drive motors available on the market. Each CASM unit can be supplied with quick-mounting motor adaptors, helping to minimise installation and programming costs, while the very low degree of backlash from each combined unit ensures precise levels of positioning and excellent repeatability.
In total, there are nine model configurations within the range, giving OEMs and machine builders a comprehensive choice of options, including stroke lengths from 50mm to 800mm, dynamic loads up to 1850N, rates of acceleration to 6m/sec2 and an operating life in excess of 10,000km, depending on application and load.
As well as the high-performance CASM electric cylinders, also displayed on the SKF stand (Stand No: P-D01) at Drives and Controls will be a wide range of the company's power transmission products, linear motion products, condition monitoring instruments, maintenance and lubrication products, as well as sealing systems and bearings.
