Smartphones and tablets for measurement and control

Smartphones have quickly become extremely popular, and now tablets are taking market share away from laptop computers. While these mobile devices might be thought of as 'recreational' products, they are powerful enough to have significant potential as engineering tools. Furthermore, the processing power, in combination with web connectivity and an integral human-machine interface (HMI), makes such products excellent for remote monitoring and control applications.

National Instruments' new White Paper, Smartphones and Tablets for Measurement and Control, considers the potential for these devices to be used as portable measuring instruments. It then describes the Data Dashboard for LabVIEW app that the company has created to make it simple for engineers to create custom, portable views of NI LabView software applications.

In addition, the White Paper outlines a firmware upgrade for wireless NI CompactDAQ chassis that adds support for mobile devices; this means engineers can connect the NI cDAQ-9191 chassis directly to a smartphone or tablet via existing Wi-Fi infrastructure or an ad-hoc Wi-Fi network.
