Specialist strain gauges for fibre composites provide benefits

HBM is now selling four different specialist strain gauges that have been developed to meet the demanding requirements of measuring strain in fibre composites. Fibre composites have many industrial uses because they provide significant weight reduction with high strength. Specialist strain gauges are needed because the strain levels in fibre composites are often higher than found in equivalent conventional materials.

The four different strain gauges now on sale comprise two linear strain gauges - one with, and one without, strain relief - a strain gauge with three measuring grids and a strain gauge with a T-rosette. The typical properties of these strain gauges are a measuring grid length of 6mm and a resistance of 350Ohm; the temperature adaptation of these specialized strain gauges is normally close to 0ppm/degC.

Fibre composites are increasingly being used in industry to protect resources. Applications range from aviation, automotive and power supply industries. The demand for specialist strain gauges is increasing because the material properties of fibre composites vary slightly in every production process and there are relatively few empirical values available.

HBM also provides additional expertise such as an extensive range of accessories and different specialist articles to highlight various aspects of measuring strain in fibre composites. In addition HBM supports its customers with training and contract installation to ensure optimum operational usage.
