Tailored controls with easier integration for machine builders

When a manufacturer of CNC automation machinery required a reliable and unique control panel to control its new equipment line, it turned to IDEC.

The machine's operator panel needed a clean, modern look that would minimise protrusions to prevent accidental actuation and debris accumulation. They also required a switch that could illustrate specific function for clear operator guidance plus provide a solution that would simplify the wiring process during assembly.

The initial consultation with IDEC focused on understanding the machine's operation, reviewing the panel design constraints and identifying opportunities to streamline the customer's manufacturing process. The control panel had limited depth available behind the mounting surface, making it impossible to use standard switches with bulky rear profiles.

The customer also expressed frustration with the time-consuming task of individually wiring each switch and the lack of clear, durable symbol options for their specific machine functions.

The key challenges were to provide a low-profile switch that would fit the shallow panel depth, offer customisation options for function symbols, and reduce wiring labour during assembly. IDEC proposed the LBW flush-mount series, which proved to be the ideal solution, with its flush bezel design projecting only 2mm from the panel surface and a behind-panel depth of just 27.9 to 34.9mm.

The LBW fit perfectly within the customer's space-constrained enclosure and is a solution used with many machine manufacturers due to its adaptability. Its IP65 protection rating ensured reliable operation even in demanding industrial environments. The illumination feature provided excellent visibility, while the separable contact blocks and wide range of colour options offered design flexibility.

Beyond the switch itself, IDEC delivered significant added value, working with the customer to create custom symbols for each switch function, printing on a plate beneath the actuators for clear, permanent operator guidance. Additionally, IDEC engineered a pre-assembled wire harness tailored to the customer's specific control architecture, significantly reducing wiring time and eliminating potential connection errors during panel assembly.

The LBW series was seamlessly integrated into the machine's control panel, rigorously tested for reliable operation, and provided the customer with a compact, customised, and easily manufacturable solution.
