Swisslog has implemented an automated materials handling system for a warehouse in Northampton for a client in the healthcare industry. Machine fencing and anti-collapse pallet rack safety screens have been designed and installed by Troax, working in conjunction with Swisslog.

A leading healthcare company is ensuring the highest safety standards at an extended and refurbished national distribution centre in Northampton by using safety fencing systems designed and installed by Troax UK Limited.

Troax's Safe-Fix machine fencing and Anti-Collapse pallet rack safety screens have both been installed in the newly extended section of a low-bay warehouse that is used to store medical products supplied to almost every hospital in the UK.

Safe-Fix machine guarding panels segregate hazardous automated areas of the warehouse where automated cranes are in operation, to provide the highest level of physical security for staff working nearby.

Minimum safety distances

The wire mesh panels, which are constructed from steel tube for rigidity and strength, protect the end of a series of crane aisles, preventing unauthorised access to the area; the fencing was specified for its ability to meet minimum safety distance requirements, which allows it to be positioned close to the automated equipment.

Only authorised personnel can gain access to this restricted zone using a series of ten interlocked doors located at intervals along the fencing. Push-pads fitted to the inside of the doors allow fast exit in an emergency.

In addition, Troax's Anti-Collapse pallet rack safety screens have also been installed in the warehouse, along a series of six runs of racking, each of which measures 10m in height and around 40m in length.

The all-welded mesh safety screens prevent accidents when pallets are being handled and catch items if they should become dislodged from pallets, thereby preventing them from falling and injuring personnel working below.

Troax carried out the project in conjunction with Swisslog UK Limited. Swisslog designed and implemented the automated materials handling system and WMS for the new low-bay warehouse.

Stephen Madden of Swisslog comments: "Troax is one of our approved suppliers and we work regularly with them on this type of project. We have a very good working relationship with them - they are flexible and work with us as part of our team to ensure each project is completed successfully."
