Ultra-compact opto sensors have big specification

The new PRK 25B range of opto-electronic sensors from Leuze Mayser may be physically smaller than other models, yet they offer one of the most powerful specifications to suit extremely diverse applications – from simple sensing operations to those more challenging, such as with reflective surfaces.

Three basic variants are offered: a retro-reflective unit with a large sensing distance of up to 10m, which is suitable for standard applications; a depolarisation sensor for detection of stretch- or shrink-wrapped items with a range of 8m; and a laser version for greater precision over a distance of 15m. The PRK 25B measures a mere 15 x 36 x 27mm, is protected to IP67 and IP69, and operates in temperatures from -40C to +60degC.

Two of the key advantages of the new PRK 25B sensors are that they will continue to operate successfully even when suffering lens contamination caused by the environment, and the inherent A2LS facility ensures outstanding insensitivity to spurious light. These features create a family of sensors suitable for industries ranging from materials handling and packing, through to precision positioning control in a small-parts manufacturing environment. Throughout any processing operation, top-mounted bright LEDs give all-round visibility to indicate sensor status.

Adaptability is a word the design team at Leuze uses to describe the new, economically priced PRK 25B opto-electronic sensor. In addition to the high operational performance, it offers a choice of mounting arrangements, plus Ultralock (a simple yet secure push-pull connection for use in tight locations), resulting in a sensor that can be included in an original machine design or used as a replacement or to upgrade machines. Alignment procedures have also been simplified with the inclusion of Leuze's brightVision technology.

The PRK 25B is the latest in a new breed of sensors being developed by Leuze specifically with OEMs in mind. The new sensors are produced on a new, more flexible production line that has enabled the company to review pricing structures, the new models being some of the most competitively priced in the country, if not globally.
