White paper: the benefits of intelligent printing in the IoT

SATO has published a new white paper to help businesses understand how the Internet of Things (IoT) can be harnessed and applied in practical terms. Unlocking the Power of IoT uses the changing role of the humble label printer from a peripheral product into a fully integrated component in the process supply chain to demonstrate how adopting an IoT world view can transform a business model from product oriented to service focussed.

White paper: the benefits of intelligent printing in the IoT

Author of the white paper Eckhard Wernich, Business Development Executive at Sato Europe, explains: "No-one can afford to ignore the huge potential for growth that the IoT represents. However, many businesses struggle to understand how this potential can be harnessed in practical terms and what changes it entails for their business processes and their people. SATO felt that focussing on one familiar process - label printing - would help to illustrate what is involved and how the IoT is transforming the way we do business."

While creating and attaching a label in order to move an object on through the value chain is a small part of a much larger process, it is also critical to success because the IoT requires objects to have an identity and be capable of communicating data. As a print technology specialist, SATO focuses on leveraging the power of data to fill in the "last inch" of the supply chain; helping its customers to exploit the potential of the IoT to connect the virtual and physical world in order to achieve precision, time and resource savings.

The company has developed Application-Enabled Printing (AEP), whereby intelligence is placed in the printer itself - thus enabling decision support and performance monitoring to take place at the source of the data. Much of the information in the new white paper is closely based on SATO's own experience of exploring and applying IoT principles to develop products for its customers.

Eckhard concludes: "What is happening for SATO and its print solutions is a microcosm of what is currently happening for other businesses embracing the IoT. We hope the white paper will encourage others to look again at basic functions like printing as a practical and immediate means of adopting IoT principles and improving their efficiency."
