Wireless position switches, sensors for explosive environments

"Wireless Ex" is a technology developed in Germany by a company called Extreme, part of the steute group, which is said to simplify the assembly and operation of sensors and switchgear in explosive environments. With the advent of new technology, switching devices are no longer connected to the receivers in a control cabinet via Ex-compatible cables, but instead use a low-energy wireless protocol created especially for such applications. As such, it is certified to ATEX and IECEx standards.

Plant and machine design engineering teams working within explosive environments can use Ex RF 96 electromechanical wireless position sensors to monitor machine components, or alternatively, use contactless Ex RF IS wireless inductive sensors instead. In this case, the Ex RF 96 ST Ex wireless universal transmitter takes care of both wireless transmission and decentralised power supply to the sensors.

steute says that its wireless sensors guarantee high transmission availability even in tricky situations, for example when used alongside other wireless systems, as is often the case in an industrial environment. Both the electromechanical Ex position switches and Ex sensors are approved to the latest ATEX-/IECEx standards for use in Ex zones 1 and 21 and were presented at the SPS 2019 event back in November. The wireless signals require so little energy, says steute, that there is no danger of explosion. The company confirms that the updated products are suited to mounting on machines and plant where access is difficult because the need for communication cabling has been eliminated through the use of wireless technology.

In the UK, the new steute range of wireless Ex switches and sensors is available from a number of sources including Malvern-based forTop Automation & Energy Control; more information is available on the company's website at www.4top.co.uk.
