PSIRT website supports IIoT security

Within the scope of Industry 4.0 and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), network-based data transmission is becoming increasingly common. However, with the advantage of borderless communication there is also a greater risk of unauthorised access if appropriate precautions are not taken. Despite extensive experience and the utmost care being taken with all products, errors may occur during programming and these can result in security vulnerabilities. With this in mind, Phoenix Contact is one of the first companies to have established an international Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT).

'Test drive' Rittal's Perforex machining centres

Rittal Perforex machining centres are a major advance for switchgear manufacturing. They are designed to automate the creation of bore holes, cut-outs and threads in mounting plates, enclosure doors and side panels. It means that the time-consuming and mechanical processing steps required for the preparation of enclosure panels can now be accomplished in a single work step to a very high degree of accuracy. The work can be simply programmed into the Perforex to be repeated multiple times for fast, effective batch processing.

Competition time! Engineering for People Design Challenge

Engineers Without Borders UK (www.ewb-uk.org) has launched the 2018-19 Engineering for People Design Challenge. The competition, which takes place across more than 30 Universities in the UK and Ireland, involves over 6500 engineering undergraduates and will help them develop their skills relating to how engineering can address real-world problems and how to communicate in an engaging way.

A new guide from WEG shows how using a Totex (total expenditure) model when making investment decisions can help to reduce costs over the lifecycle of an asset, which offers significant long-term advantages compared with the conventional approach of purchasing from a capex (capital expenditure) budget and then paying the running costs out of an opex (operating expenditure) budget. While the WEG white paper focuses on the water industry, the Totex model will, at some point, surely become the preferred model when machinery and automation are being specified and purchased.
