Free poster explains functional safety standards

Pilz Automation Technology is offering a free poster that helps users decide which functional safety standard to use and how to apply the selected standard. With a clear layout, explanatory diagrams and a useful glossary, the A1-sized poster will be a great help to anyone in any doubt about whether to work to EN IEC 62061 (Safety of machinery - Functional safety of safety-related electrical, electronic and programmable electronic control systems) or EN ISO 13849-1 (Safety of machinery, Safety-related parts of control systems, Part 1: General principles for design).

Free poster explains functional safety standards

At the top of the poster is a table that shows which standard is most appropriate for machines incorporating electrical, electronic, programmable electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic or mechanical technologies. The next section covers SIL (Safety Integrity Level) determination for EN IEC 62061 and PL (Performance Level) determination for EN ISO 13849-1.

For EN IEC 62061 projects, the next part of the poster explains realisation of the safety function and determination of the achieved SIL. For EN ISO 13849-1 projects, the corresponding section on the poster addresses realisation of the safety function and determination of the achieved PL.

For both standards, verification is shown on the poster as the last step in the process.

Also on the poster is information about the Pilz PAScal Safety Calculator for verifying functional safety in accordance with the requirements of EN IEC 62061 and EN ISO 13849-1 (see the MachineBuilding.net review).

Terms used on the poster are explained in the glossary (lexicon) that is shown in a panel down one side.

Contact Pilz to request a free copy of the Functional Safety poster. Note that the first 100 respondents will receive a high-quality paper copy; other respondents will receive the poster in the form of a PDF file. Email [email protected] or telephone +44 (0)1536 460766.
