The differences between EN 62061 and EN ISO 13849-1
Stewart Robinson, a Safety Systems Specialist at Pilz Automation Technology, will be presenting a paper entitled Machinery Safety - PL or SIL, what is the difference? at the forthcoming Safety Control Systems Conference 2011: Practical Impacts of IEC 61508 & New Safety Technologies, which takes place on 24/25/26 May 2011 at the Renaissance Manchester Hotel, Manchester. The aim of the paper is to explain the differences between EN 62061 (the machinery-specific Harmonised European daughter standard to IEC 61508) and EN 13849-1 (the Harmonised European standard that is identical to ISO 13849-1).
The Safety Control Systems Conference will focus on technologies and the application of safety-related control and instrumentation systems in the chemicals, energy, mining and manufacturing industries. In particular, it will discuss the changes to the IEC 61508 standard and the implications this will have on different industry sectors.
Case studies and practical applications will be presented by specialists experienced in safety life cycle activities such as hazard and risk assessment and the determination of Safety Integrity Levels (SILs). Topics will be relevant to a wide range of industry sectors.
Changes to functional safety standards
Delegates will learn what updates have been made to the IEC61508 standard and the implications for their industry, as well as how these IEC functional safety standards are being applied successfully to manage safety projects.
In addition, the conference provides an opportunity for delegates to network with experienced safety experts and peers, as well as to update their knowledge of safety technologies for process and machinery protection. They can learn about the life cycle approach to safety-instrumented systems through case studies and critical discussion.
Stewart Robinson's presentation will provide attendees with a toolkit for applying the main requirements of PL or SIL safety-related control standards in the machinery sector. The main differences between the two standards EN 62061 and EN ISO 13849-1 (also known in the UK as BS EN 62061 and BS EN ISO 13849-1) and the similarities in their general requirements will be defined. Attendees will find out how the correct application of either standard will produce the same result. An evaluation of hardware performance according to the architectures and reliability requirements will be compared using a practical safety function as an example. A checklist of how to apply both standards to machinery safety assessments will also be provided.
